Technical Tours

All tour groups will meet in the Sheraton, Level 1, International St. Entrance, at least 15 minutes before the listed start time.

Georgia Power’s Transmission Control Center

Tuesday, Oct. 31, 09:00 - 11:00 and 13:00 - 15:00, US$25

The Georgia Power Transmission Control Center is located at 241 Ralph McGill Boulevard in downtown Atlanta. It functions as the system operator for the Integrated Transmission System (ITS) in the state of Georgia including providing monitoring, restoration, system security and regulatory reporting functions for the ITS. The Transmission Control Center has recently been expanded and features several new technology systems.

Due to the fact that the Georgia Power Transmission Control Center located in Atlanta is undergoing renovation to accommodate the consolidation of the former Savannah Electric Power Company Control Center and the Georgia Power Transmission Control Center in Valdosta, we regret to inform you that technical tour of the Georgia Power Transmission Control Center must be cancelled.

Georgia Power’s Distribution Control Center

Georgia Power operates two geographically located Distribution Control Centers (DCC) in its’ territory. One is located about 30 miles south of Atlanta in McDonough, Georgia. It functions as the system operator for the Georgia Power distribution system including providing monitoring and restoration functions. The DCC utilizes several innovative information technologies including an Outage Management System as part of the Trouble Call Management System.

National Electric Energy Testing Research and Applications Center (NEETRAC) High Voltage Testing Facility

Tuesday, Oct. 31, 09:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 16:00, US$25

Visit NEETRAC’s High Voltage Laboratory in Forest Park, Georgia. This visit will be highlighted by a presentation and tour of the facility with discussions of NEETRAC’s work and studies in the area of system analysis. The NEETRAC High Voltage Laboratory includes a 700 kV and a 300 kV series resonant test set, a 1,050 kV cascade test set, a 600 kV and a 2.2 MV impulse generator and a 1,000 kV DC test set. NEETRAC is a nonprofit, member supported electric energy research, development and testing center, housed in the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Widely recognized as one of the world's foremost electric energy research, testing and evaluation centers, NEETRAC is engaged in a wide spectrum of innovative activities.

Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Rail Service Facility

Visit the MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) Armour Yard Rail Service Facility. See the inner workings of this new, state-of-the-art, 33 acre facility where MARTA’s electric rail cars are maintained, overhauled, and stored. In addition to the rail car maintenance areas, the tour will visit the on-site Control Tower and a Traction Power Substation.

The Georgia Aquarium – Behind the Scenes

Go behind the scenes at the Georgia Aquarium. See how a team of experts makes seawater, feeds and provides medical care for the animals at the world’s largest aquarium.
